on a log

yesterday i fell ill. i think there is a virus going around pathlight, cause on tuesday there were 8 teachers on MC, and almost everyone i spoke to complained of a sorethroat, which i was what i had to. when i was on my way home, i started to get a really bad headache and the rain made it worse. anyway doc said i have high fever (why is 38 deg high fever? isn’t normal 37.0?) and gave me 2 days of mc.

anyway the point is that i have slept so much these few days, far more than what i ever thought possible. on monday, i slept from 7.00pm to the next day 5.45am. when i got home on tues, i slept from 5.00pm to 7.30pm, ate dinner and saw the doc, and slept from 9.30pm to 11.00am this morning. that is damn a lot of sleep. let me count… that is a whopping nearly 27 hours in 2 days! not bad at all.

i think i am okay now, and shall go back to school tomorrow.

hey you eveileb me

recently i found a ki blog while surfing around the net, and wondered why it did not come into existence when i was still taking ki! but i guess it is great that some seniors (i think they are seniors, can’t be teachers right?) are willing to share their stuff for ki with the juniors, cause i think for many of the first batch of ki-takers, we were not really provided with many resources and for lots of the examples you actually have to prowl through the net and books so that you can use them for the essay.

so oh wells, even though i think the authors of the blog are tad egoistic, i am sure they are just having fun behind their anonimity! so if any of my dear juniors are reading my blog, this site is for you! (though they seem to update only once in a while, i think the examples already up there should be useful. yep.)

jig on the way

sats is finally over for me. finished. (important phrase for use in pathlight!)

i took sats i twice and sats ii twice (maths and physics the first time, and bio the 2nd time) and that means 4 times of cramming for sats. and i am glad it is finally all over now (: yayness.

anyway, i wanted to post up pictures of my trip to medan, indonesia, but there are too many pictures for me to go through one by one for now (okay so i am lazy, big deal!), so i decided to write about my birthday!

as usual, it was a quiet affair, with some frills here and there. since birthdays are always reserved for family time, wy and js met me on the 22nd for birthday dinner! and they were very nice to meet me at angmokio hub since it is almost right next to pathlight! we had ichiban sushi and sat there for like 2 hours talking, until we saw the waiters giving us dirty looks and decided to leave to roam around the mall, talking again.

actually, when i used to work at mcdonald’s, i never had the feeling of irritation with customers who sat at the place for the whole day. in fact, i hardly even noticed them. so it is quite strange that i often think that the servers would be angry with us for staying at the restaurant for a long time. hm perhaps at mcdonald’s, the employees do not directly serve the customers since we are mostly at the counter or in the kitchen, so we would not really notice if the customers have sat there for 10 hours. oh wells. but it’s true, afterall restaurants are places of business, so it would not be quite nice if we 霸占 the seats for too long.

anyway, wy and js gave me a giraffe bag, a tall lion plushie, and a tall packet of tissue paper. notice any pattern? i always knew that my good friends are really thoughtful. haha!

on my birthday itself, the surprising thing was that the pathlight teachers were celebrating the january pathlighters birthdays after staff meeting! so i got to celebrate my birthday in a big way with the teachers. it was kind of awkward too, cause afterall, i was just a temporary staff till june, but pathlighters are naturally nice people, so it was okay! (:

at night, family dinner time!

yepyep dinner was good, at first i was kind of unhappy cause i actually did not want to eat chinese food on my birthday, but too bad my mum refused to enter the port bar and grill so we ended up eating somewhere else. but the food was quite good and inexpensive, so i was okay after that. oh wells! there are still many other dinners to look forward too. besides, my dear owl korkor chin nam  gave me a treat at phins too! (the waiter was really cute. and when i told my brother about it, he was like “oh i know who you’re talking about.” he proved my point!)

oh my sis and her boyfriend gave me my new phone – the k810i! haha i have desired for this phone since forever. so yayness!

and my brother and his girlfriend gave me a new wallet that i am totally in love with!

photographic hologram

even though i asked for comments about the previous post, it seems that only 1 of my readers that i have commented -.-” that is very sad! considering that wordpress does have the function of blog stats, and i know exactly how many people read my blog regularly, i am very sad!

oh wells. but i guess like wy and zr, people will just think that i am asking strange questions and strange questions should not be answered. hm i guess i shall have to change tack, and perhaps start asking in real life. then people would be sure to answer my question as long as i push them to (:

yayness. anyway the only one who replied is green (you seem to sound like someone i know, yet not.) and he/she (it would be great if i was enlightened) asked, “do people rationalise before making a choice or do people rationalise only after making a choice?” i do not really have an answer, but i vaguely remember hume saying that reasoning does not have the ability to make us act. was it hume? sigh. but anyway, i believe that the line somewhat means that choices are not made upon reason. (oh now i remember i talked to xinyang about this too!)

for example, if you see someone drowning in water, can reason tell us that we should make the decision to save him? not really, i think. reason would tell us – there is someone drowning in the water. if i save him, he will live. if i do not save him, he will die.

and so?

yeah i guess that is somewhat how reasoning works. so i believe humans think they rationalise before making a choice, but more often than not, we do not.

but anyway i am missing the point. the purpose of writing this entry is to reminisce about dear mr. jude chua. haha! okay, perhaps not. even though he remains my favourite philosophy teacher, it is too strange to reminisce about him! but green’s question reminded me of what he taught us once.

apparently, there is a difference between reasoning and rationalising! reasoning is the process of thinking before arriving at a conclusion, while rationalising is the process of finding reasons to support your conclusion, after you already have a conclusion! there is a slight difference!

anyway so i guess if we take green’s question literally, humans rationalise only after making a choice!

hahaha.

anyway, for myself, i believe i usually make choices first, before finding reasons for why the choice is right. hardly a wise way, but oh wells, it makes life more interesting!

plume ride

ah. heck it, since i managed to exasperate wy and zr with my ridiculous question when i met them yesterday, i shall write about this question, cause i still think it is incredibly interesting. oh anyway, zr - i hope wy and i did not bore you, and i am sorry for being such a bright light. and bon voyage! i know you will not read this until you reach america, but never mind! when you read my blog when you are in america, you will think that i actually wanted to say bon voyage before you left singapore! so it is okay. (:

yesterday, when i met wy and zr after work at tcc, zr was as quiet as ever, and it did not make any sense for me to just talk to wy about the things we wanted to talk about since the meeting was cause zr was going back to america, so i asked this question to provide entertainment for them. however, it definitely did not mean that i thought this question was funny-haha! i do think it is a funny question, but not in that way! i think it is an interesting question all the same.

so this is the situation.

one beautiful morning, you enter mcdonald’s for some breakfast. in the breakfast menu at mcdonald’s, there is this set meal thing – a sausage mcmuffin + coffee/tea for a total of 2 dollars.

okay i digress – 9 in 10 people would probably think that i am being ridiculous. but no! it is true, there is really this thing at mcdonald’s, it is just that many people do not know about it, and mcdonald’s does not actually promote it either. but yes, there is such a thing. because i worked in mcdonald’s before! and back to topic.

and since you love sausage mcmuffins so much (i sure do) , you decided to get this meal as it is only 2 dollars!

however, the thing is that you do not want coffee or tea. you are parched; you just want some mineral water. and being the nice place that mcdonald’s is, you can choose to change your drink, you only have to top up the difference. for example, you want to change your drink to an iced milo. and iced milo in mcdonald’s is $2.20, and coffee/tea is $1.95. the difference will be $0.25, so you will pay a total of $2.25.

but here’s the deal. mineral water at mcdonald’s is evian (and who doesn’t know evian spelt backwards is naive, i.e. people who buy evian are just purely dumb or naive.), and yes, it costs the same as iced milo, and is even more expensive than coffee or tea! knowing that you can easily get a bottle of mineral water just outside mcdonald’s for $0.50, will you change your drink to a milo or mineral water?

in this case, you absolutely do not want coffee/tea, you are not adverse to milo, but you would just prefer mineral water.

i think the crux of this question is - do you mind getting ripped off for that bottle of mineral water? or would you rather pay the same amount for something more “value for money” (i.e. iced milo – iced milo is more expensive at a coffeeshop then mineral water! this means you get ripped off less if you take the milo.) since it is the same price?

and would you get the mineral water later? (even though then you would have to spend a total of $2.70)

oh and i think we should assume that mineral water is mineral water, whether it is evian or ice mountain, except of course, its brand. i am not really interested in hearing about how evian is really different from ice mountain – in any case, i prefer ice mountain.

well. zr said he would get the milo cause it would be more worth it. (and what more can i expect from the quiet zr.)

and wy, being the extremely _______ (insert adjective here) person that she is, she insisted that:

1. she would drink her own water
2. she would never get herself into such a situation
3. the situation depends on how you define “value for money”

but anyway in the end she said she would get the evian cause all that matters is that you want the mineral water more than the milo. oh but she did mention that she was too lazy to get the mineral water somewhere else. haha!

so what do you think? i would love to hear more opinions. (so please do comment!) not really interested in arguing or debating, but it is just a purely hypothetical situation that i am interested in knowing what others would do.

for me?

i changed my drink to the mineral water in the end.

(okay so it is not as hypothetical as it should be.)

mini-me

actually, i wanted to post this quite some time ago but didn’t quite get around to doing it. i think it was as early as when jay chou’s newest album “on the run” came out! let me check – november 2nd! that was a long time ago. lol.

anyway one of my favourite songs in his new album is 彩虹 (:

but one thing that fascinates me is the line that i have bold-ed -
“没有地球太阳还是会绕”
in english, it means that without the earth, the sun will continue revolving.

it kind of reminds me of ki. a long time ago when i still had ki, one of the prime examples for the fact that science is not set in stone and can be prone to mistakes is the copernican revolution (refers to the paradigm shift away from the Ptolemaic model of the heavens, which placed Earth at the center of the Universe – thanks to wiki). essentially, people used to think that the sun revolved around the earth.

but as all good students should know, this is certainly not the case!

which was why the line in the song really struck me. i was like “???”. the sun does not revolve around anything! and why would anyone think that without the earth, the sun will stop revolving? it just seems like a bad effort at being romantic, or an extrapolation of the line used in relationships – “without him, the earth will still revolve”.

oh wells, i just thought that this particular line was exceptionally strange. but i love the song nonetheless. it does not strike you as nice at first, but it grows on you.

very nice.

—-

edit:

and i have been shot down.

so the sun does revolve about the galactic centre, “completing one revolution in 220 – 225 million years”, according to wiki. but that is as good as saying that the sun is almost stationary! oh wells, but i must admit that i am wrong!

and i sure hope jay chou did check wiki and that he does know the sun actually revolves around the galactic centre. and i wonder why he did not write “没有火星太阳还是会绕” instead. to me, the line does not exactly express much, does it? or was he trying to say that nothing is indispensible? which brings me to another point. i do believe that nothing is indispensible, but i also believe that everything has an effect on everything else. like without the earth, the sun might still revolve about the galactic centre, but definitely in a different way.

oh wells.
