talking to uncle dennis during lunch today reminded me of a scene that i once saw in a show – a man showed a picture to a lady, asking her if it was a sunrise or a sunset.
i cannot remember what the lady replied, but i do remember the man saying that whether the picture was a sunrise or a sunset depended on the lady’s outlook in life. a postitive person would see the picture as a sunrise, while a negative person would tend to view the picture as a sunset.
well, i guess it would probably not be a surprise to many people, since we have often been “taught” to associate sunrises with beautiful beginnings, while sunsets gave a feeling of the end, with just darkness to look forward to.
for me, i would think that sunsets are equally beautiful, and i wonder why sunsets are taken in a pessimistic manner. if you think about it, they are both beginnings, or endings, are they not? the sunrise is the beautiful beginning to a day, while a sunset can be seen as the beautiful beginning of the night. the sunset is the ending of the day, while a sunrise is likewise, the ending of the night. they are similar!
i guess the separation there would probably then be because of the comparison between day and night, where good things happen in the day while bad things happen at night.
sigh i just feel unfair for the sunset, cause the sunset sometimes bring to a close to a bad day too.

WHAT: An alarm clock that wakes you up with the smell and sizzle of cooking bacon.
WHY: No one likes to wake up, especially by an alarm. This clock gently wakes you up with the mouthwatering aroma of bacon, just like waking up on a Sunday morning to the smell of Mom cooking breakfast. Unless you’re Jewish.
HOW: A frozen strip of bacon is placed in Wake n’ Bacon the night before. Because there is a 10 minute cooking time, the clock is set to go off 10 minutes before the desired waking time. Once the alarm goes off, the clock it sends a signal to a small speaker to generate the alarm sound. We hacked the clock so that the signal is re-routed by a microchip that in responds by sending a signal to a relay that throws the switch to power two halogen lamps that slow-cook the bacon in about 10 minutes.

taiqi watermelon
today i was eating kueh chap at home, and then it made me think of a question.
cause my parents bought two packets of kueh (which is the white large pieces of noodle) and one packet of the liao (which is the meat and tofu and eggs and intestines), so my brother and i were each supposed to have a packet of the kueh and share the liao. so my brother started eating first, cause i woke up at 3 pm and had an extremely late breakfast.
later when i felt hungry, i went to the table and started eating my extremely late lunch.
…
so assuming that you are a really hungry and greedy person, and it would be advantageous to you to have more of the liao cause you really love food - there are 2 people who have agreed to share the packet of liao, would you choose to eat first or second, if you cannot eat together?
well for me, i think i would choose to eat second. in my above real scenario, it would definitely make a lot of sense for me to eat second, because my brother is family and when you are family, you tend to leave a lot more liao for the second person by eating less of the liao. at least this works for my family. it is somewhat like when my mum cooks chicken wings, and like my brother is sleeping instead of having dinner for us, we would leave like 5 or 6 chicken wings for him even though we do know that he will probably eat only 3, tops.
so i think the question would be more difficult to answer when it refers to someone who is non-family, or when you are trying to generalise the situation.
in my opinion, whoever the person is, i would choose to eat second. for the first person, he has the knowledge that he would have to leave some amount of liao for the second person, and i believe that most people would tend to leave more than enough for the second person because he or she would care how the second person would look at him or her. if the second person has more than enough liao left for him, he would probably think that the first person is a small eater, but if the second person has very little liao left for him, he would definitely think that the first person is very selfish! so i guess in the name of self-preservation, the first person would generally leave more liao than required for the second person, because he is unable to really estimate how much the second person would need.
however, this line of reasoning would obviously be heavily dependent on whether the first person is a generally nice normal person, and the relationship between the first and second person. it would definitely not apply between enemies, but then again why would you agree to share a packet of liao with an enemy.
edit: i do think that if you are a really hungry and greedy person, initially it would make more sense to be the first person, because there will be more potential in you getting to eat more of the food – but whether you will fulfill this potential is another question which i still believe is dependent on how you want the second person to view you.
but come to think of it, this is a way i often use to answer dilemmas involving other people – if i am the first person, i will just take damn a lot, and even if i care about what the other person thinks of me, it would not matter because the second person will NOT know how much liao there was in the beginning! haha.
but uh well. i think people usually just eat, and not think so much about what has just happened.
you know, i could tell you the truth, but i don’t.

funny rice
today was my big day, according to my dentist.
the braces are finally out! even though the braces are finally out, the retainers go in and they have to be worn full time for the next 3 months, and every night for the rest of your life. it is supposed to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original positions. come to think of it, it is quite a big sacrifice, isn’t it? like just because i had “bugs bunny” teeth, i went to get braces so that i could get straight teeth, and i will be stuck wearing these retainers forever. oh wells, there is a price to pay for wanting to look better. oh and apparently i am going to talk funny for a week because of the retainers. anyway i shall look forward to 3 months later.
anyway, every week, wy js and i will meet for tea or dinner at angmokio hub. cause well uhm js and i work in angmokio, and its wy’s rest day from all her tuition classes! so poor wy cause she has to travel out just to meet us >< right but meeting them every week reminded me about how “not-girls” we are.
yes sure, we are girls in the sense that we meet for dinner to talk for like hours. the previous time we were at new york new york, we ate for like.. close to 2.5 hours! i was pretty amazed. haha then after leaving nyny, we went to anderson’s ice cream and talked some more. that is quite “girl” i think. cause like we do not go to lan shops and stuff. but wy and i always want to go to the arcade and js will say “i don’t want to go to the arcade!” cause she thinks that it is lame i guess.
but like, we just do not go shopping for clothes. or go to the salon. or do manicures and pedicures. or buy makeup. or like wear nice clothes and camwhore and then put it up on the blog or something. i mean, when you read female magazines that my sister reads, or like fictional books, that is what girls do together, is it not? haha. that is why i like my two dear friends so much! (:
but anyway this kind of got me thinking about girls who do not bother to dress up and wear nice clothes and put on make up. in the first place, what is the point of dressing up? to look presentable, that is what most people would say. i do believe that this is a valid reason if you are working and making presentations etc, but i guess in this case i would be thinking about people around my age range – let’s see. 15 to 20? sometimes, when i meet new people and they are all made up with nice clothes and nice hair, i am always surprised to find that they are younger than me! so well, at this age, i doubt we are dressing up to look presentable to make presentations to convince people that you should totally hand this 15 billion dollar project over to me. i would think – frankly, to gain attention of the opposite sex. well then again, there are girls who just want to show that they can be prettier than you, thus i shall not bother to discuss them. haha =P
so now. when girls bother to dress up to gain attention of the opposite sex, it means that they are putting in an effort to find a guy. well with the fact that males are visual creatures, it would naturally mean that they will find it easier to get a guy.
so my question is – do girls who do not bother to dress up deserve to be in a relationship? there is no free lunch in this world (according to old sayings and do not tell me that there is air and sunlight and water cause i will strange you.) and this means for anything you want, you have to somehow make an effort to get it. so for girls who do not bother to dress up, i think it somehow shows a certain attitude towards boy-girl relationships – you do not care for it. in a sense, you are totally just not making an effort, so why do you then deserve the chance to be in a relationship? i guess it would be unfair to girls who dress up and do all sorts of things to gain the attention of guys, and yet have no guy!
i guess this would be stereotyping guys in a sense. cause guys are not just visual creatures right? like they look at the character and personality and stuff like that. but you see, character and personality are things that the girls would do whether or not the potential guy is present, which would mean that there is no effort involved when they present or carry themselves in a certain manner in front of the guy. so if we have to work for the things we want, un-dressed up girls with lots of personality probably should not have guys either.
this is quite interesting and i think i am not making a lot of sense. a number of counterarguments i would anticipate – love does not require effort, love does not just happen to the “deserving”, nothing is fair in this world etc. i would agree with them i think. if i am not thinking logically.
but well really, perhaps un-dressed up girls just do not know how to dress up afterall.
in other news, somethings i want to remember -
1. wy should now be called “send me quotes!” WAHAHAHHA. gosh that was super funny. js and i came up with the replies “how do i unsubscribe from this service?” and “i didn’t sign up for this service!” (inside inside inside joke)
2. today i was sitting beside this super imba built guy on the train. he was playing super sudoku. super sudoku involves both letters of the alphabet and numbers.
3. my brother was angry cause i didn’t make any mention of him on a levels results day. so now a shoutout to my FAVOURITE brother (not just favourite cause you’re my only brother but cause you’re really my favourite brother – all my friends know that i always say you’re the best!): thankyouthankyouthankyou for coming down to school to give me moral support! even take taxi down! anyway this kind of things must say mehhh. you know i love you alot what! that time when you first got together with veron, i was very sad okay! cause you don’t want to talk to me anymore.
